It’s my only free evening this week - I’m going to celebrate Mr. Rogers Day by having some of Chris’ soup for dinner and donating to his grocery fund. What he calls “being part of the sacred circle of giving and receiving.”
This was a really lovely read that's made me unexpectedly weepy, so while I'd very much like to share some kind of touching story or more bolstering comment, I'm forced to instead leave it at that and go blow my nose ❤️

One thing I've learned about watching Mr. Rogers with my kids now is that he did these weird kind of psychedelic opera episodes sometimes, like this one that my son got into for a while -- https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8sa0gk. I didn't remember these!
I remember those opera episodes! Is that the beautiful and golden-voiced Betty Aberlin in that clip?! (And who is the strapping man playing her brother?!) Thanks for sharing the link!
Yes! Betty and Brother Lloyd go to Other Land and Brother Lloyd gets kidnapped by the wicked witch and imprisoned in her taffy factory. But luckily the swans and beavers help them out.
Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty (90s).
I could go on and on with all of the books and articles I've read on the topic of kindness.
We have to push against the wave of contempt that has engulfed the modern zeitgeist lest we forget what we are supposed to be doing on this planet — loving each other into fullness. Neighborly kindness has saved my life more than once. And I try to give it back whenever I am able. I tip servers extra. I am always kind to checkout clerks and try to make them smile. I cut people slack when they screw up. I treat delivery drivers like they are human beings. I have human conversations with my house cleaners. And I just hope that this generosity comes back around to bless me when I most need it — on those days when I need a helping hand.
Appreciation, recognition, mentoring, uplift - all of these are easy gifts to give. Thank you for your lovely words. They've made my day. 🌼
My parents still live in the same neighborhood where I grew up. They are in their 80s and have two remaining long-term neighbors. You might think that I'm about to describe what those other neighbors do for my aging parents, but that's not it. Those people do help my parents but my parents help them just as much. My mom just drove one of them to the hospital during an emergency and walks everyday with one who had lost much of her vision, even though my mom's older. My dad helps with plumbing jobs and electrical repairs, as he has for years. And they eat together and attend the opera together regularly. They are all older but keeping themselves young by maintaining a community. They are an amazing example of community among neighbors. ❤️
I think your parents and my parents would get along! Being embedded in a community with mutual responsibilities to one another is so important. It’s how we used to live for nearly all of human history, after all. Please give your parents a hug from me!
