I look forward to hearing about health care in the Czech Republic!
Also, I was thinking about this last week — the way our cultural narratives about love and romance, epitomized by the rom-com, probably do more harm than good.
Love is definitely more like the basset hound mug and looking like crap in the hospital.
Have you seen “The Tinder Swindler”? It popped up on the top 10 movies on Netflix last week, and it was really a fun documentary so I recommend it if you’re looking for something to watch. If you haven’t seen it, I don’t want to give anything away, but early on, the “main woman” to tell her story talks about the influence of Disney movies on her ideas of romance—and you see how that (seems to) directly influence the events that follow.
I haven’t seen it yet, but I was planning to see it because of the Prague connection! And I agree that Disney’s ideas about love are not ones that healthy people ought to adopt!
I have never seen the wedding singer or Titanic! Along with many of the movies you mentioned. My all time fav love story movie is….yes Love Story! I also love Love Actually but agree the door step card confession is awful, I loved the Portuguese cleaning lady story best in that movie, oh and Hugh Grant!
My husband and I do not celebrate Valentines Day, instead we celebrate February 9th, the day we met in 1979. There is an advantage to this day, we get to have a romantic dinner out without all the overpriced specials and crowds on V day! The best celebration was 2 years ago when my best friend got married on Feb 8th and the party went past midnight so celebrated our anniversary with her and her new husband.
On the subject of men really wanting marriage, another great friend was dating a guy for about 9 years from 18-27, they were great together, clearly in love, but never lived together and never engaged. One day she came to work in tears he had broken up with her, they had had a long talk about commitment and he said he didn’t want to get married ever! Within a year he was married and becoming a dad with another woman…..he met her after breaking up with my friend. She was devastated. Sometimes it just isn’t meant to be. Sadly my friend never found true love, she is happy, but alone 40 years later.
Thank you for sharing a happy and a sad story! I love the idea of staying up at a friend's wedding so you could celebrate your anniversary with them! As for your friend and her ex-boyfriend, I think a lot of times when people say they never want to get married, they just haven't found the right person yet. Or, to quote Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, "It's not that he didn't want to get married. He didn't want to get married to ME." I'm glad your friend is happy being single--it sounds like that guy wasn't a prize anyway.

Another romcom trope i cant stand- when the leads totally ignore their friends for someone they just met.
Yes! This is an excellent point!
