Thing is, lots of stories in the travel press about how wonderful Venice is without tourists, and how happy they are not to have us there, and want to figure out New ways to live without tourism. I think it is rude to go where you aren’t wanted, so, much as I love Venice, not going back. 😥
This was why we went at the beginning of April, and even then there were huge numbers of tourists around Piazza San Marco. I don't blame the Venetians for disliking how tourism has changed their beautiful city; when we lived in Prague we saw the same thing happen. Hopefully the ban on large cruise ships will make it better.
I am also a planner, but have started to enjoy serendipity in traveling. My daughter Sophia is going to geology camp in Scotland in June and somehow we got the idea that I could go to Edinburgh and join her at when her camp was done and we could spend a week there having fun. So...after not much thought I decided to go and was even able to pay for it with miles (bonus!). I have always wanted to go to Scotland, but something about deciding in this last minute way makes me so happy. And it is always lovely to spend time with just one of my daughters since they are twins and are often together when I see them.
Whoa! Good for you! What a wonderful adventure it will be to hang out in Scotland (in June too, when you’ll have sunlight for about eighteen hours per day!) with Sophia. (That camp sounds fun too.) As you can imagine, I would love to do a trip around Scotland’s highland distilleries. Have a great trip together!
We were going to go to Cornwall UK for our honeymoon until we were invited to a friends wedding the week after ours in Scotland….
So change of plans and we honeymooned in Scotland. It was beautiful (wet) and we toured a distillery. Chris was in heaven, me not so much, I tasted the single malt and was reminded of disinfectant….I quickly gave the remainder to my husband and said to the guide I was driving! I got my revenge by insisting we go pony trekking, I had ridden horses all my life….he had not! Note to others while on your honeymoon, perhaps avoid horseback riding!
Omg, you are making me laugh! I can imagine that riding might pose some hazards on one’s honeymoon! Maybe one day we can all travel to Scotland, and Chris and I will drink all the Scotch, and you and Matt can enjoy the scenery!
OMG, one of the main plot points in the book I'm reading for English is the villain falsely turning the hero in for kidnapping a nun! Are you secretly reading along...?
"...every other recalcitrant device... ." You are so right. Dad still loves a project and is always on the lookout for one! (from Mari's mom)
We are so lucky!

Watching Stanley Tucci searching for Italy he is in Venice, from your descriptions and his show….I now really want to go!
Oh, I have to check out that show! I love Stanley Tucci!
