One way in which asparagus is not a metaphor for humans: i would never leave bits of person all over the house! ...Unless you count how my hair sheds everywhere... oh no.
I love Spargelzeit!! When I lived a year in Germany, I loved how excited everyone got. My relatives would invite me over for dinners where Spargel was the main event. Still the best I’ve ever had. I love it best simply roasted, with some seasoned salt and maybe a bit of Parmesan sprinkled over.
I also love seasonal things. My wife has favorite songs and albums that she curates by season, and I’ve picked up the habit - in our house there are certain turns in the weather that always bring out certain music.
In fact today was the first day of the year I let myself dust off this song, because it’s the warmest day of the year so far. There were a couple days in March I thought might be the day for this song, but something in me said to hold out - and I’m glad I did, because today is perfect. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kebq-i5LKqc
Thank you so much for the link to the song! It’s lovely and reminds me of the chorus of birds I hear every morning, starting around mid-March. One day there will be no birdsong, and the next it’s a whole orchestra.
I really had to force myself to read this as you know, I hate asparagus! I however loved your human analogy and will take it one step further, some humans smell weird too!!!

This came out last week when I had the flu with gastrointestinal symptoms, so I saved it. And I’m so glad I did! I LOVE asparagus!
The concept of seasonality really hit home the first time I read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I’m grateful for the variety we now have access to (well relatively speaking; I’d never have had bananas if it weren’t for modern food production, but most of us experience far fewer and less superlative varieties of produce exactly because they ship well). But you won’t catch me eating much out of season fruits and veg any more for the simple reason of taste.
I hope you are feeling better! And so cool that you have hitchhikers thumb--or maybe my biology teacher was wrong about that too, and it’s as common for women to have it as men?
So cool that you live in Portugal! When we lived in Prague, our neighbor had a cherry tree, and we were allowed to take all the cherries that hung on our side of the garden wall (which was a lot). Cherries you harvest yourself are a revelation!
Yes, we live in Portugal. We are friends with a friend of yours, Amy. We don’t have cherry trees this far south, only northern Portugal. No “fresh off the trees” for us.
We love asparagus in our house cooked every which way but best on the grill. :-) Thank you for the asparagus knowledge, I will be sharing at the next dinner.

Best comment ever! I’m laughing for real!

I thought of you (and your loathing for asparagus) while I was writing this! Thanks for suppressing your disgust to keep reading!

In conclusion, I have hitchhikers thumb!

It’s one of the few vegetables I don’t like, and the smell just adds to the unpleasantness…
But, I wish all the asparagus fans much enjoyment!
That’s the spirit!
I’m a big fan of asparagus and of seasonal produce. I never buy cherries from away! I wait with eager anticipation cherry season here in Portugal.
As an aside, in our house 100% of our family smells asparagus pee…
Love you articles!

I wondered if you knew Amy! Hooray for connections like this!
Indeed.

Mmmm! Asparagus on the grill!
It’s entirely possible that your last recipe has changed my life. Wowza 🥰
I’m so glad you like it! It is quick and easy and perfect for this time of year!
