I'm an old Patriots fan from way back and even I am tired of seeing them in the Super Bowl. So...

I do not think that the connection between sports and the military is weird. The connection is primarily with the players not the audience. Many sports and board games are training for war, developing teamwork, obedience to authority (rules), hard work, risk-taking courage, and competitiveness. The British were especially good at this. "The battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton" is popularly ascribed to the Duke of Wellington, who was a graduate of Eton College and commander in chief of the British and allied armies at Waterloo, where they defeated Napoleon.

I would like to see schoolteachers and health care aides honored at an NFL games.

P.S. nice sweater, and you have great recycling trucks.

This is an interesting point, and of course a lot of NFL players have served in the armed forces. Thanks for the kind words about the sweater!

Your post reminded me to contact the person running the Super Bowl pool at work, it is the only thing that keeps me engaged during the marathon event, that and yummy food! I concur on your Patriots comment, I am sure I have told you before of the year I won $200 but only if the Patriots came from behind to win…they did, so I both celebrated and was annoyed! I support in this order: Green Bay, Steelers, Giants, 49ers. I lived in Wisconsin, my son went to school in Pittsburgh, we live near NYC and my brother likes the 49ers. Regarding the military support, they do deserve to be recognized but as you said so do many other groups, especially in these past few years! And I am definitely opposed to the National Anthem playing unless it is at an international tournament like the World Cup. You do not hear God Save the Queen at a Chelsea / Liverpool soccer match, but England v Germany…yes, alongside the German anthem too!

Oh, I like the Steelers too! And I will admit it: my favorite part of the Super Bowl is the food--and the commercials!

Mari, have you ever heard George Carlin do his comedy routine about the difference between football and baseball? It's very funny, clever and true!
